Kevin Lee, Bio
A TV news cameraman since 1994,
Director Kevin Hui-Jen Lee has worked at half of the dozen news stations in Taiwan since its expansion of cable TV in the 1990’s. He was a producer at Eastern Broadcasting Company (EBC) before resigning on February 12th, 2008, when the headlines of the day was the former vice-president’s becoming a grandfather. He has won numerous awards and recognitions for his work. A daring master of many topics and styles, Lee’s greatest interest is with the interconnection between politics and society, uncovering public secrets and ironies. Currently, he is working on a film The Road towards Authority which talks about the Legislative Yuan and the Congress and another which focuses on drug abuse.

Unveil the Truth I: The Government Virus (2011) uncovers the cover up of bird flu in Taiwan. Lee has earned a lot of respect and is recognized for his thorough research, perseverance, and his bravery of revealing how Taiwanese bureaucrats shield one another to the public.

Unveil the Truth II: State Apparatus (2013) won the Grand Prize and best documentary at the 2014 Taipei Film Awards for his uplifting and humorous tone, while exposing the chaotic madness of government bureaucracy.

In The Taste of Apple (2015) which, in 2016, won the Taipei Film Award ceremony, Lee celebrates the existence of freedom of speech in Taiwan. It took three years to make, the original idea for the film was “simple”: “I realized how much of an impact “Apple” (nickname of a Hong Kong media corporation) has on Taiwanese readers’ reading habit, and how it changed the traditional media ecology in Taiwan.” Through long-term on-field observations at Next Media’s office, as well as the interview with it's founder Lai Chee-ying, this film covers the ups and downs of Taiwan’s media industry over the past decade after Next Media, including the “paparazzi culture” it brought with it. “I dedicated the film to GAO Yu (a Chinese reporter) because it shows a ridiculous status. China is a country without democracy freedom, but they have GAO Yu, a reporter who’s willing to go to jail just to tell the truth.“

Self-Censorship (2018): At the 2016 Taipei Film Award ceremony, Lee criticized the Chinese government’s thought-control policies on the subjects of Taiwanese independence, Tibet, Xinjiang and the Falun Gong. This outpouring inadvertently became the inspiration for his next film. The majority of the project’s production costs were acquired via internet crowdfunding and also by the National Culture and Arts Foundation. Depicting a series of protests by the Beijing artist, Hua Yong, as well as the mysterious disappearances of five shareholders from Causeway Bay Books in Hong Kong and incidents involving Chou Tzi-yu, Leon Dai and Lee Ming-che it exposes the government’s pervasive control over “Greater Chinese” society.
